What counts as a roofing emergency

If water is coming in, or something on the roof could fall, treat it as an emergency. The jobs we are called out to most often are:

  • Active leaks through a ceiling, often after heavy rain finds a slipped tile, a cracked ridge or failed flashing
  • Storm damage with missing tiles, loose ridge or verge tiles, or a section of roof stripped by the wind
  • Flat roofs on garages, porches and extensions that have split, blistered or blown off at the edges
  • Chimneys with loose pots, cracked flaunching or a stack that is leaning or dropping mortar
  • Fallen trees and branches that have broken tiles or punctured the roof
  • Gutters and fascias that have come away and are pouring water down the wall

What to do while you wait for us

  1. Keep everyone out of any room where the ceiling is bulging, cracked or dripping.
  2. Catch drips in buckets and move furniture, rugs and electrics out of the way.
  3. If water is near lights or sockets, switch that circuit off at the consumer unit if you can reach it safely.
  4. Keep people and cars clear of the area under loose tiles, chimneys and gutters.
  5. Take photographs from the ground and inside the house. They help us and your insurer.

Please do not climb onto the roof or up a ladder in wind or rain. A roof can always be repaired. A fall from one often cannot.

How an emergency call out works

  1. You call or send photos. Tell us your address, what you can see and whether water is coming in. We tell you honestly when we can be there.
  2. We make it safe. Loose tiles and debris that could fall are taken down or secured, and the leak is stopped with a temporary covering or a quick repair.
  3. We inspect properly. Once the weather allows, we check the roof close up and in the loft, and photograph everything we find.
  4. You get a fixed written price. The permanent repair is quoted item by item, so you know exactly what you are paying for before any further work starts.
  5. We carry out the repair. The finished work carries our own twenty year workmanship guarantee.

Insurance claims after storm damage

Most home insurance policies cover sudden storm damage, although wear and tear usually is not covered. We give you dated photographs, a plain English description of the cause and an itemised quote, which is what most insurers and loss adjusters ask for. If your insurer wants to speak to us directly, we are happy to do that. Read our storm damage checklist for the steps to take.
