Storm damage roof repairs in Sussex and Surrey

Has a storm lifted tiles, stripped a ridge or torn a flat roof at your home in East Grinstead, Crawley or anywhere in Sussex and Surrey? We make the roof safe, record the damage properly for your insurer, and then carry out the permanent repair at a fixed written price. Emergency line 07939 862 818, office 01342 445004.

Typical storm damage we repair

  • Tiles and slates lifted, cracked or blown off, often along the eaves and verges
  • Ridge and hip tiles loosened or thrown off where old mortar has given way
  • Lead flashing peeled back from chimneys and walls
  • Chimney pots and flaunching damaged or unstable
  • Flat roof coverings torn at the edges or lifted from the deck
  • Gutters and fascias pulled away by wind or falling branches
  • Holes from fallen trees or debris

Why some roofs suffer more

Storm damage is rarely random. Roofs on higher, open ground take more wind, and many homes across the High Weald around East Grinstead sit on exposed ridges. Older roofs with ridge tiles held only by mortar, and tiles that were nailed sparingly when they were laid, are far more likely to lose pieces. Current standards require ridges, hips and verges to be mechanically fixed for exactly this reason. When we repair storm damage we fix to those standards, so the same storm does not do the same damage twice.

Storm damage and your insurance

Most buildings insurance policies cover damage caused by a storm. Insurers usually look for evidence of strong winds around the date of the damage, and they normally exclude gradual wear and tear and poor maintenance. Clear photographs and an honest report help your claim go smoothly. We describe what we find accurately. If part of the problem was existing wear, we say so, because a report that overstates storm damage can cause problems with your claim.

Why do ridges and verges fail in storms?

Ridge and verge tiles sit at the edges of the roof, where wind suction is strongest. On many older roofs they were held only by mortar, which cracks and loosens over time. BS 5534 now requires mechanical fixing for ridges, hips and verges. When we replace storm damaged ridges or verges, we fix them mechanically so they are better able to resist future storms. See ridge and verge repairs.

What about trees and falling branches?

Falling branches can break tiles, damage rafters and crush gutters. Once the immediate damage is made safe, it is worth having trees near the house assessed. Some trees are protected by tree preservation orders or are in conservation areas, where you must give notice or get consent before cutting them back.

Warning signs of hidden storm damage

  • Tiles that look slightly out of line from the ground
  • Mortar or tile fragments in gutters
  • Lead flashing that looks lifted or creased
  • Damp patches appearing days after the storm
  • Flat roof membranes with lifted edges

Storm damage in East Grinstead and Crawley

High, exposed areas around East Grinstead, including the edges of town and villages toward Ashdown Forest, take strong westerly winds. Crawley’s long terraced rows and open estates can funnel wind between buildings. In both towns, older roofs with mortar bedded ridges and verges are the most likely to lose tiles. See emergency roofer in East Grinstead and emergency roofer in Crawley.

What affects the cost of storm repairs?

As a guide, a typical storm repair for missing tiles or a loose ridge usually costs between £200 and £600, with more extensive damage costing more. Cost depends on the extent of the damage, access, materials and whether a temporary repair is needed first. We price permanent repairs after a free survey, with an itemised quote for your insurer.
